Wow, there a lot of customization with the danmaku system, being able to mix different character’s spellcards and separating shot types to different characters. It adds an element of planning to the danmaku battles that is more than “just dodge”.

The story of a fairy revolution is neat and the expressions on their faces in the opening of this game are pretty funny.

But I have to say, the overworld is far too big. It takes a long time to gather keys with the SDM’s darkness, empty rooms (which I assume there going to be items in the future.), and the amount of random encounters. These issues are compounded that the player will be traveling back and forth a lot, from finding the locked door first to checking back on the many labyrinth-like hallways for missing keys.

This also highlighted for me, that random encounters take one minute on average to complete. The problem is twofold as there is little variation in danmaku design and that the player has no way to shorten encounter by playing with excellent skills or the use of spellcards. Through I can see these issues being fixed if the rate of encounters was toned down and more danmaku battle variants were added, in accordance to the large overworld the player will be walking through.

I note, that I have only fought against Sunny in the basement and have not progressed though the SDM Atrium at all.

Still, I am impressed with everything else the game offers as a Touhou RPG x STG genre mix. Can’t wait to see more.
